Kinda Smells Like Carrion, Too

Medium garnet with clear edges.  Big wonderful rotting hay funk.  Decanted heavily and it doesn’t go away.  Just more fruit is evident behind it.  Elegant ripe fruit shines nicely underneath, turning some of the shallower funk to spice, cola, cinnamon-roll-glazing and earth while maintaining that incredible cover of barnyard.  In the mouth, fat and ripe initial thins easily and heads tarry in the onslaught of mid-to-late tannins.  This is not a terrible little wine and shows basically no polish of 7 years.  Still, it is def at peak right now.  The decline will be quick, as the obese fruit gets strangled out by the funk & tannin sandwich.  Especially for New World drinkers at this PP, already leery of what mysteries can lurk in a Spanish wine.  14-0   ♦
