Black black impenetrable inky black with no edge and heavy curves of fat mountain fruit clawing with sharp edges. You know this thing is going to be a lazy boy through the twisties from the first sniff. Big raw beef and eucalyptus make for a package so blisteringly ripe and thick . Generous decanting brings out rich nuances not visible in the initial nose. Dense red dust and spring water cascade off heady cassis and sweet vanilla.
I open this producer’s Cabernet the other day because, well, you know Howell Mountain Cabernet has an undeniable appeal. I set the Petite Sirah on a rear shelf for later because–even as good as the Cabs can be, the Petite Sirahs from this appellation have an additional cult reputation.
In the mouth, this thing sings a blockbuster song. Thick and chewy and ridiculously tannic but flying under a velvet cloak of decadent fruit. Dark chocolate and warm leather with a definite chunk of peppery alcohol, you know this is going to be a big boozy broad and she’s going to be a ton of fun.
