Alderman

From the coveted Alder Springs Vineyard comes this baby and–with the possible exception of Yorkville Highlands–nothing strikes Syrah-terror in the minds of true geeks from Mendo like this place. I’ve always found Alder a bit riper and less vegetal, and this bottle checks all those boxes. Ridiculous blue-purple in the glass, an effusive floral nose ripe and compelling after points of burnt asphalt blow off. The fruit is a deep concentrated stew–almost into Paso-territory–laid down on lavish alcohol and perceived sweetness.

Tasting it is nearly toothache-inducing, were it not for the complexity of berry and sharp structure. Deep jellied Jolly Rancher relies on achy mineral rasp to balance, the final product coming across with fine points of cola-dirt and green tannin. To me, it doesn’t feel like too many Rhone-comparisons are necessary: California sunshine is the key-phrase here, with nuances headed into actual chubbiness save for the rash of dryness framing the finish. I would have guessed probably 2 full points higher in alc, such is hte incredible smoothness and richness of body. Bottled under DIAM-30, and probably could go that distance without terrible results.
