This HAS to be the least-expensive gorgeous flagship Meritage red wine of any winery in Sonoma and Napa. And you saw those prices I posted the other day from Foley’s sale they’re running. I paid 40 bucks for this at an over-priced liquor store the other day. I think it’s well under $75 full retail. This is the problem with having grown-up money: I remember drooling over these as a kid (they were probably $30!) and now they seem absolute bargains. I’ve had this wine probably 20 times in my life and I know for a fact there has never been on with disappointed. This one is no exception.
Glass-staining impenetrable black crimson in the glass, no garnet; no brick; just a sliver of ruby at the rim swirling blood onto the crystal. Thick with green ire in the nose, eucalyptus and redwood and manzanita blossom laid down on concentrated berry, sharp and viral: no tertiary what-so-ever here at 8. Probably could use a decant, but I’m too lazy to grant a nod to the Aeration Industrial Complex.
It hits the palate with more sharpness and structure, everything visible in the bouquet peeling off in layers of complexity. The girth is astounding; the concentration choking; the beauty eloquent and omnipresent. Green vegetal makes several more appearances, honestly clouding and obscurring fruit to some extent. The finish raspy and dusty, more briary berry squirting on every receptor. Everywhere you look more beauty shines.
