Med ruby with pink edges. Considerable funk on opening settles down to heady minerality and deep, ripe blackberry fruit. Heavy, round wet leather. I don’t even know what this variety is. *checks label* 86/10/4 SY/Cab/Pinotage.
In the mouth, biting acidity balances the generous fruit quite nicely. Simple, somewhat bitter tannin. Easily one of the better So. African wines I have had in my life–although that is NOT a huge number. And I can’t remember the last SY or Cab I have had–most of the handful I have had have been Pinotage, to rather under-whelming results, and that is generous. This is a pro-grade, modern wine.
