Christmas Short Cuts

#christmasroadtrip CdP heading into 10 years old upstairs at 515 Kitchen & Cocktails Santa Cruz Xmas eve eve 🎄🍷🎄 Nice mellow fruit and easy tannin with a soothing chunk of brett. Not super exciting but the nicest bottle of wine I could find in town and working well with spicy duck udon and lamb curry bao. Oh and watching hipster-craft-cocktail-bar serve fine wine is kinda hilar for the extra point. It took them 20 minutes to find and unlock the bottle and then it was opened across the room and dumped into horrible glasses in front of me. OMG, could wine-wervice in Santa Cruz be even worse than San Luis Obispo? Not possible.
2010 E. GUIGAL Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rhone France 14.5

Here’s another one I tried over the holiday–but didn’t blog about it or gram it. For good reason. This just wasn’t worth it. Check out that ABV tho. Not a horrible wine–just boring and thin and oxidized.
2015 WOODENHEAD VINTNERS Charbono Mendocino county 11.5

Fun to revisit the old 2013 95AG 32k case 40 dollar 80% SLD “Napa Valley” Long’s Drugs wonder before it became the 2014 16k case 85 dollar SLD “Estate” no longer at Rite Aids because #soifknows … How many did you buy? This is a beautiful wine, laden with maraschino, but seriously stewed in black tea tannin still. Here’s what I wrote 3 years ago:
2013 CLOS DU VAL Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 14.1

Fount this on a list at a restaurant called CHOCOLATE in downtown Santa Cruz during lunch and snapped it up. Only tasted these briefly at events and been impressed. Rich and lovely and for an entry-level Pinot, it couldn’t be beat.
2016 BIRCHINO Pinot Noir ‘St. Georges’ Central Coast 13.5

Easily the lushest most delicious easily approachable Jordan I think I’ve ever had in my life. Beautiful nose beautiful beautiful nose rich and round, tannins a complete afterthought in the balance. I don’t use the word delicious very often in regards to wine but this one is just flat-out delicious. It’s easy to see why 2013 is shaping up to be a drinker’s vintage. One of my favorite Alexander Valley Cabernets, but in the numerous occasions I have visited this darling in the past, it has been tightly wound and required almost a decade to begin to show loveliness. Not this 13.
2013 JORDAN WINERY Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Sonoma 13.8
