Well that was above-average. Ridiculous dinner @blackcatbistro in Cambria with @dustynabor [Dusty Nabor Wines] and @karinlanger [Bolt To Wines] and @borrisbrown [Christopher Blake Wines] and @dannenabrown and of course @_coif … Side patio all glassed in and nice (no inside dining in this part of California).
Broke in with a little 2012 Effervescence from @ch_MarieCourtin compliments of @sommselect, starting to show some deep yellow toasty notes. Headed straight into a ’16 @cutruzzolawine #riesling off the list from Riven Rock VYD. Crazy petrol in these not-bone-dry numbers, and the 13-0 played into the amount of time it took to open up. Literally the polar opposite of a white, @brokenearthwinery’s new 2019 fiano, a bit of an anomaly in that it was inert-pressed and spent its primary days in stainless before visiting neutral oak for 6 months. Show-stopping floral & fruit and heady neutral oxidation notes. At this point tried to get a @Kennethvolkvineyards Steiner Creek Pinot off the list but they were out. Big disappointment there as I had no idea he made this wine and adore Steiner Creek VYD. It was here I noticed/suggested a theme: several great Cambria wines on the list and since we were dining in Cambria maybe we should order all Cambria… Straight into Gigondas @julien_brechet : just a brilliant wine so perfect in every way–possibly wine of the night. 60/25/15, the Syrah really flushing things out. And the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the #horsepowervineyards HOW WAS IT. I found it a little unsettling in its density of mint and opaque fruit. Kind of a “I’ve got more guns than I need, and less guns than I want” sorta wine. Will it ever relax? The 2007 @justinwine Isosceles was brought along as an interesting play thing, full and round and deeply patina’d, I think everybody agreed it was cab, but most felt it tasted a decade older then the label stated. Kicked another Cambria off the list and–having had it many times–I felt @stolovineyards‘ 2016 estate SY would be an interesting juxtaposition to the Walla Walla I was not wrong: many of the same nuances, just in a far gentler way.
Oh yeah and the food was good too. If you need any more detail, call a doctor. GOOD NIGHT NOW
By the way, the winelist online at www.blackcatbistro.com is NOT accurate. It is 10X bigger and quite deep.
