The first thing you notice about this wine is the 1200-gram bottle with 3″-deep punt and a great cork. Taken with the ridiculously low price, one wonders how the packaging costs factor. Dark, glass-staining purple ruby with an abrupt edge. Thick and elegant on the nose, deep soiled cherry, gorgeous oak and luscious hillside Napa fruit jammed chock-a-block with chocolate, leather and fatty trimmings. Looking and smelling like Cabernets 3X this price, it definitely is a bargain for lovers of this style.
Near-perfection in the mouth, it enters clean and juicy, fruit gradually building to monstrous proportions: bitter, unctuous berry, grainy and packed with a myriad of Cabernet tones. Plush acidity serves up tight floral and earthy briar on a silver platter. Clean and direct while teeth-wipingly chewy, the delicate entry quickly becomes abolished by gob-stopping tannins. Nicely balanced all the way through, wonderful to drink even at this young age, it has DECADES to go. Considering the winemaker’s résumé, the source of the fruit and the sub-50$ price it is an absolute no-brainer to stuff as many as you can in your cellar.
