Kinda probably shoulda opened this a few years ago, but here we are. Such is the catacombs of my largely-unregimented cellar. Glorious clear amber in the glass, bottle-funk expressive on opening which largely blows off… somewhat. What’s left is more funk, of a somewhat fatigued nature: entirely drinkable but certainly NOT something one would call an expressively aged and beautiful example of almost-10YO pinot. The nose has high notes of cherubic blueberry coated with rather dreary glassine tiredness.
Brittle, buttery butterscotch frames the taste, a nod to savory herb juxtaposed against shrill acid. No ridiculous depth of fruit exists, but contained therein is rather beautiful sharp pomegranate and cranberry. It’s mellow and advanced, the Vit-C grip of contained remainders the telling point. And still, the cardboard-y funk of tiredness prevails. Pretty much a classic example of early-beautiful varietal dedication gone somewhat undesireable as time progresses. A very interesting study.
