This $5 Wine Does. Not. Suck.

Clear garnet through and through.  A little pruneyness blows off to rich supple fruit.  Heady tobacco and nice oak with bright cola influences.  Bright, but with a touch of wonderful Old World funkiness.  This is a Grocery Outlet buy which they must have TONS of as it has been in almost every store I have visited for over a year.  I have seen this in Santa Maria, Atascadero, Petaluma, Red Bluff, Redding, Chico, Lompoc… everywhere.  (Yes, I am a dork for Grocery Outlet wine and visit them wherever I am.)  I bought several of these long ago and I still see the 2007 constantly.  I don’t remember exactly, but in the 5-6 dollar range.  60/19/11/9 Cab/MT/CF/SY and you can do FAR worse for the money.  Such an amazing Super-Tuscan for the money.  This wine EXEMPLIFIES the argument against buying cheap California shit like Charles Shaw or any of the myriad of lower-shelf 10-dollar grocery-store offerings because here you can get a SOLID, well-made bottle of wine with varietal and regional interest for nearly the same money.  Drinking fabulously right now and hints in the nose tell of not lasting much longer.  In the mouth, rich and ripe with obvious cellar-age nuances visible while still maintaining considerable acidity and verve.  Fruit thins a bit in the finish as smoothly-polishing tannins take over.  I do not usually consider price-point toward a final rating, but it is almost impossible to ignore in this case.  What a wonderful wine.  Find some.  Break the bank at $60/case!  Drink it and love it.  13-5   ♦♦
