Like A Roc

Black impenetrable dark dark purple and not crystal-clear.  Slightly staining with almost no edge.  BIG funk.  Huge upon opening and only slightly tapers off with air.  Green and stemmy, showing dirty-baby-diapers layered against still, ripe fruit, ashtray and sweat punctuated with a steely high note.  I bought a bunch of these–and its Grenache mate–on close-out several years ago and they have rewarded immensely.  Pure Barossa depth and agility shine against positively Euro foundations.  In the mouth, far crisper than one would guess from the nose, tightly wound and straining against its harness.  Gobs of decadent fruit, leather and vanilla play against a brilliant acid base, until grainy tannins take over and slowly push the fruit into a memory.  14-5   ♦♦
