Pure and light–but not simple: these are the true qualities of wine from Northern Italy. And while you have seen numerous Corvinas from Bardolino on these pages, here’s one conforming to the rules of Valpolicella. MUCH easier to find in the US–nearly every decent Italian restaurant has at least one–and usually quite inexpensive. Completely transparent ruby-garnet in the glass, that muddled itchy nose one part leather and smoky tar–another deep cherry and strawberry stuffing. Plenty of earthy nuances linger around peat and vegetal, with a sharp peppery note for effect.
Supple and glorious in the mouth, the fruit a distinct berry with gobs more peppery splendor along for the ride. It starts out sweet and mellow, rapidly crescendoing into ridiculously rich nectar. Brilliant structure fills any assumptions of dessert, though, as the bitter glow of acid and tannin make sure things are balanced. A fun wine working well with food, well-distributed and won’t break the bank.
